Applications of Silica in Water Treatment

Industrial silica product supplied by Alvand Giti Hegmataneh

Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO₂), is a hard mineral found in sand and quartz. In water treatment, properly graded silica is primarily used as filter media to remove suspended solids and reduce turbidity. Removal of dissolved organics or heavy metals generally requires additional treatment media and a system designed for those contaminants.

Silica can be used in water-treatment systems as follows:

1. Silica Filtration
Graded silica is placed in sand-filter beds to physically retain suspended particles as water passes through the media.

2. Organic-Contaminant Treatment
Standard silica sand is not a universal adsorbent for dissolved organics. Activated carbon or other specialized treatment media may be required after water analysis.

3. Heavy-Metal Treatment
Standard filtration silica does not reliably remove dissolved heavy metals by itself. Specialized adsorbents, ion exchange, membranes or chemical treatment should be selected by a qualified water-treatment specialist.

Before selecting silica filtration media, assess raw-water quality, target contaminants, filter design, particle size and manufacturer instructions. Media quantity and grading must match the treatment system.

Selecting Filter-Media Silica

Specify the filter type, design flow, bed depth and the equipment manufacturer's recommended effective size and uniformity coefficient. The sieve distribution matters more than a single nominal mesh because fines can increase pressure drop while oversized grains may reduce particle capture. Confirm cleanliness and fines content with a representative sample.

Water Quality and Maintenance

Sand filtration addresses suspended solids and turbidity. It does not replace disinfection or treatment designed for dissolved chemicals. Monitor differential pressure and filtrate quality, then backwash or replace media according to the filter design and measured performance. Do not assume a fixed replacement interval for every installation.

Information Needed for Supply

To select a suitable grade and packaging, send the required sieve range, filter specification, order volume and delivery destination. If removal of a particular contaminant is required, share the raw-water test results and consult the system designer before ordering.
